What Are Stretch Ceilings?
Stretch ceilings are a special kind of dropped ceiling made out of PVC material. They cover the original ceiling in a room with a flexible, fireproof, and waterproof PVC material that is stretched over and attached to lightweight aluminum tracks. The aluminum tracks are installed into the drywall on the walls of the room, forming a perimeter track or frame for the stretch ceiling to be installed on.
More Than Just A Fabric Ceiling
Many people believe a stretch ceiling is a fabric ceiling, but this is incorrect. Fabric can be prone to many issues, including stains, mildew and mold. That is why, at LG Interiors, we use BARRISOL® stretch ceiling technology rather than fabric material.
BARRISOL® is a PVC ceiling that is dust-proof, fire-resistant, anti-microbial, stain-proof, and incredibly durable—everything that fabric is not. It can also be used to mimic other materials like satin, mirrors, and cloth. You can trust that your new dropped ceiling will be durable and beautiful with PVC.
The Stretch Ceiling Installation Process
To help you get a better understanding of stretch ceilings, we will take you through the whole process of installation. Please do not attempt stretch ceiling installation yourself; leave it up to the professionals at LG Interiors.
1. Custom Design
Before we can install a stretch ceiling, we need to design it. Our team will take measurements and record the location of any light fixtures (e.g., pot lights or chandeliers) or other unsightly fixtures that will be covered by the ceiling, if applicable. If the ceiling is installed in a building under construction, we can do this by receiving designs and specifications.
Next, we will formulate the design. Stretch ceilings can be customized to look like a painted ceiling, mirror, or translucent, backlit ceiling or panels. The possibilities are endless!
After you have selected the colours, finishes, and spaces, we will create a design for the ceiling based on your wants and needs. Our team will send the information to our manufacturer when the design is approved. They specially create the stretch ceiling according to the specification of the room and the design; every ceiling is specific to the interior.
2. Preparation For Installation
After we have received the stretch ceiling, we will schedule a date for installation. Our team will arrive on-site on the scheduled day with all the necessary equipment.
3. Install The Aluminum Tracks On The Walls
Next, we will fix lightweight aluminum tracks to each wall by drilling them into the drywall or plaster below the existing ceiling. The track will be the ceiling structure, keeping the ceiling shaped accordingly.
Did you know that there does not need to be four walls to form a track? We can also install dropped ceilings in triangular rooms!
4. Heat and Install The Stretch Ceiling
Once the track is installed, our team of professionals will move in a propane heater to heat the room. We don’t do this because we are cold; we do this because the room needs to be at a high temperature to ensure the stretch ceiling is more malleable.
Heating the room can take some time, depending on the size of the space. When it is warm enough, we will then attach the corners of the ceiling to the edge of the track using harpoons and continue installing the harpoon one section at a time.
